Not Alone For Miles

I told my brother about this on the phone last night and he said I should write it down before I forget the details. Camping alone outside Flagstaff after a rough year, I woke before dawn to complete stillness and felt distinctly not alone despite being the only person for miles, something present beside me that had no shape and no sound but was unmistakably there, watching over the dark, deliberate and unhurried. I sat with it until the sun came up. I've gone back to that same spot twice since, hoping and not finding it again.
