The Morning After The Divorce Was Final

A stranger at church last week asked if I'd ever had a moment I couldn't explain, and I surprised myself by saying yes without hesitating. Sitting on the beach in Corpus Christi the morning after my divorce was finalized, expecting to feel destroyed, I felt something communicate to me, without any words I could point to, that I was going to be alright, a certainty that didn't come from my own reasoning because my own reasoning had nothing hopeful left to offer. I got up eventually and started walking. It was the first morning in a year I felt like myself, and the first time I felt like I wasn't the only one who knew it.
