Why I Tip The Way I Do

My daughter asked me tonight why I always tip generously at the diner near us in Green Bay, and telling her the real reason made me want to write it down properly. Years ago, broke and humiliated, I walked out on a bill I couldn't cover, and the waitress who caught me quietly paid the difference herself rather than call the manager. In the moment she looked at me, I felt something pass between us that was bigger than her own kindness, like grace had used her hands to reach me because I couldn't have received it any other way. She never said a word about it. I've spent every year since trying to be that kind of quiet to somebody else.
