Someone Paid Without Asking My Name

My sister told me I should post this somewhere since I keep telling the story at dinner. I lost my job in April and spent two months pretending to my kids that everything was fine. Sitting in my truck outside a Charleston hardware store, unable to go in because my card kept declining, I said something close to a prayer under my breath, more out of desperation than faith. A stranger tapped on my window two minutes later and paid for what I needed without asking my name, telling me it happens to all of us before driving off. I sat there certain, in a way I can't defend logically, that I'd been heard. I cried in the parking lot for ten minutes.
