Ring Toss

State fair. Cheyenne. August two years back. I was there with my kids, the usual chaos of it, funnel cake and complaining about the heat. We stopped at one of those booths where you throw rings at bottles. My youngest kept missing and getting frustrated. A man behind the counter, older guy, weathered looking, leaned down and said something to her I could not hear. She nodded and tried again and made it. On the way home she told me he had said: just throw it like it already landed. I have thought about that a lot. It sounds like nothing. I cannot explain why it has stayed with me the way it has.
