We scattered my grandmother's ashes at the beach this morning. She loved this day. The moment we finished, a single pelican landed on a piling twenty feet away and sat completely still for several minutes while we all stood there. We're not a particularly spiritual family. No one had words.

I was hiking solo two days ago and took a wrong trail in fading light. I was starting to panic when I heard a calm, clear voice say stop and wait. I stopped. A ranger appeared on the trail twenty minutes later and said if I had kept moving I would have been completely lost by dark. I was alone. There was no one near me.

My grandmother died in 2019. She and I were close in a way I have never been able to fully describe to anyone. Last March I was hiking alone outside Sedona, on a trail I had done a dozen times, when I heard a voice say my name. Clearly. In her cadence. In her accent, which was specific to a small town in rural Georgia. I stopped walking. I looked around. There was no one within sight on the trail in either direction. I sat down on a rock and stayed there for a long time. I did not feel afraid. I felt, for the first time since she died, that the distance between us was not permanent.

I am not a religious person by background. I want to say that first. I was going through a divorce and had not slept more than four hours in weeks. At 3am on a Tuesday I was sitting on the floor of my kitchen in Kansas City and I heard — clearly, not ambiguously — a melody. Not from a phone, not from a neighbor. It was in the room. It lasted maybe ninety seconds and then was gone. I cannot explain it. I did not try to. I got up off the floor, went to bed, and slept for nine hours. I have not heard it since. I do not know what it was. I only know what it did.
